Strategies to improve staff attendance and manage ill health

The aims of the course:
  • To help delegates to weigh up the impact of poor performance against the student’s entitlement of good quality education
  • To ensure that staff are treated fairly in the balance of the college’s duty
  • To give delegates improved confidence in dealing with these sensitive issues
  • To ensure understanding of the legal implications of dealing – and not dealing – with cases of ill-health
  • To demonstrate fair policies and procedures to follow when staff are:
    • Off on long term sickness
    • Taking lots of occasional days off sick
  • To draft an action plan for the college that will lead to improved staff attendance and reduction of costs of absence – both in terms of staff morale and financial terms
  • To examine the case for dismissal of staff on the grounds of inability to attend work on a regular basis
  • To demonstrate that all problems are solvable – many cases often appear to have no resolution!

Reasons to attend.
All managers of staff need to understand their duties in relation to the college and also to members of staff when ill health, incapacity or both become evident. Often the hardest part of a manager’s role, this course will examine a range of strategies for dealing with staff that are unfir to attend work due to long term sickness or who frequently take time off sick for short term illnesses. We also examine the links between incapacity and high incidence of sickness absence and discuss ways to tackle these.
