10.00 Introduction to ‘groundrules’ for the day

10.15 What is assertiveness?

  • Recognising assertive, aggressive, manipulative and pasive behaviour
  • Verbal and non-verbal communication

11.00 Self evaluation: Exercises focused on common workplace situations

  • Understanding influences on behaviour - triggers and blockages, personal, organisational and social
  • (Coffee break during this session)

12.30 Lunch

13.30 Assertive strategies

  • A 'bill of rights' for us and others

14.00 Making it happen: building skills in assertive behaviour

  • Assertiveness in meetings
  • Handling aggression from others
  • Handling passivity from others
  • Coping with and giving criticism

15.30 Action planning - priorities, preparation and review

Reasons to attend.
For everyone who whorks with people, improving communication, particularly in handling difficult and sensitive situations is a key factor in developing assertiveness. This course enables participants to step back from their charactersitic ways of responding to situations, make positive choices about their behaviour and practice new ways of managing difficult situations in the workplace
